Maximum vertex occupation time and inert fugitive: Recontamination does help

چکیده

Given a simple graph G, we consider the node search problem with inert fugitive. We are interested in minimizing the maximum vertex occupation time, i.e. the maximum number of steps in which a vertex is occupied by a searcher during a search of G. We prove that a search program which does not allow a recontamination may not find an optimal solution to this problem. Moreover, the difference between the minimum maximum vertex occupation time computed by a monotone search program and a program without such a restriction may be arbitrarily large.

Monotonicity and inert fugitive search games

In general, graph search can be described in terms of a sequence of searchers’ moves on a graph, able to capture a fugitive resorting on its vertices/edges. Several variations of graph search have been introduced, differing on the abilities of the fugitive as well as of the search. In this paper, we examine the case where the fugitive is inert, i.e., it moves only whenever the search is about t...

Fugitive-Search Games on Graphs and Related Parameters

The goal of a fugitive-search game on a graph is to trap a fugitive that hides on the vertices of the graph by systematically placing searchers on the vertices. The fugitive is assumed to have complete knowledge of the graph and of the searchers’ moves, but is restricted to move only along paths whose vertices are not guarded by searchers. The search number of the graph is the least number of s...

Monotonicity in Graph Searching

We give a new proof of the result, due to A. LaPaugh, that a graph may be optimally " searched " without clearing any edge twice. o 19~~ Academic PWS, IIIC. Let us regard a graph as a system of tunnels containing a (lucky, invisible, fast) fugitive. We desire to capture this fugitive by " searching " all edges of the graph, in a sequence of discrete steps, while using the fewest possible " guar...

The bandwidth minimization problem has a long history and a number of practical applications. In this paper we introduce a generalization of bandwidth to partially ordered layouts. We consider this generalization from two main viewpoints: graph searching and tree decompositions. The three graph parameters pathwidth, profile and bandwidth related to linear layouts can be defined by variants of g...

To Satisfy Impatient Web Surfers Is Hard

Prefetching is a basic mechanism for faster data access and efficient computing. An important issue in prefetching is the tradeoff between the amount of network’s resources wasted by the prefetching and the gain of time. For instance, in the Web, browsers may download documents in advance while a Web surfer is surfing on the Web. Since the Web surfer follows the hyperlinks in an unpredictable w...
